On to our treat. We covered empty toilet paper rolls with peanut better then rolled them in a bird seed mix. The girls each made two, we placed two of them on trees in the backyard and the other two we placed in the little bird feeder/bath that my big bee made at the Home Depot a few weeks ago with Daddy Bee.
Last year we wanted to start a garden, so we could produce some nice fresh veggies over the summer....we failed! Our seedlings did great, but didn't work so well transplanting them outside. This year we are back at it, with hopefully more success. We are going to attempt starting from seeds again and if that fails - we will buy ones already started! Today we started our seeds. Check out the Target $1 bins for the little containers we used. We planted pumpkins, green peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, summer squash, watermelon and winter squash. I also found these cute little flower cups in the $1 bins at Target. We did some last year too, they are packaged so nicely with a compressed pellet of soil, add a tablespoon of warm water and poof! magic soil. After all that planting we decided to make a special treat for the birds. Bummer I forgot to grab a pic of the birds nest that was made in our watering can. The girls for the past few weeks have told me, "Mom there are sticks in there". I never took a look until this past week and yes lots of sticks in there. That bird is living snug in there. We haven't been able to see if there are any eggs in there but I am guessing there are. After dinner we ended the evening with a visit to the Penn State Arboretum and a trip to the Creamery. Check out some sneak peaks of what will be the NEW Childrens' Garden.

Last night we took advantage of the late hours at Discovery Space. The last Thursday of each month they stay opened till 8 pm. We were the only group there, so guessing that many people don't know about the late night hours (yet), so take advantage! Its been quite some time since we visited last and they have some very cool things for the kids to check out. The dino dig was a big hit, finding large rocks and fossils. Since it wasn't crowded the kids had tons of room to run around and jump from activity to activity. They kiddos didn't spend much time at the Invention Bench - but its looks like a cool place to check out. I love all the hands one stuff they have for the kids.
Discovery Space also offers specials events, summer camps and birthday parties. Check out this weekend they have two special events:
We are having a lazy Easter Sunday. I took my bees to the park to try out their new scooters. We had a small crash and decided to head back home early. (Just a brush burn, but those things can be down right nasty!) When we got home we decided to make Easter Bark, chocolate and marshmallows would make it all better! We used the recipe from Butter with a side of Bread. I didn't have any shortening so I used vegetable oil (about 1 1/2 tsp). Her tips on melting white chocolate are key! And of course the girls loved it! Now off for more fun outside!
I hope everyone had a great day! I have been thinking every which way to get out of coloring Easter eggs. I just foresee spills and broken eggs everywhere. I decided to go a nontraditional route and color paper eggs using chalk. I used sheets of card stock, Crayola chalk and used this egg template: Egg Template I used parts of a cardboard box to tape the eggs down too. It gave the kid something hard to color on and a background that I was ok with if it got dirty. They dipped the end of the chalk in water and colored away (surprisingly they went fairly easy on the water - about 5 dips, I think you could probably use a little bit more if you wanted). Allow them to dry and carefully peel off tape. Tada!!!
Keeping the weekend of fun going! We attended the Jaffa Shrine Circus in Altoona yesterday. The girls have never been and had a blast...honestly I'm not sure I had ever been to a circus either. I'm not a huge fan of clowns, so glad they stayed down on the floor, away from the crowd. When we arrived you could go for a ride on an elephant and camels. My girls choose the elephant! And some how managed to get in the front! Lots of fun acts! Camels, tigers and bears - oh my! They also had 4 crazy motor-cross bikers in a cage zooming. I'm sure when I was young I would have thought that was cool, but as a mom....I was cringing the whole time!
One sign that spring is coming in Happy Valley is the annual Blue/White football game! I LOVE football and its great to get a little taste of it in the spring. My little bees are big fans too and were so excited to spend the day tailgating and at the game with friends. ![]() I couldn't pass these Little Lion Headbands for the girls from Happy Valley Helmets. We hosted a breakfast/brunch tailgate with lots of yummy food! Since there was no Family Fun Carnival this year, we had our own fun...corn hole, ladder ball, washers, bubbles, lots of bubbles. But what kid doesn't like bubbles!? Lots of cheering at the game! Most of us made it till about half time...all the fun from tailgating and the sun quickly tired everyone out! I will be anxiously waiting the fall for some more football fun, but in the mean time I will gladly enjoy the sun and warm weather!
We had a very busy Sunday! We started off at the Native American Pow-Wow that was held at Mount Nittany Middle School. This was our first time attending (and sadly maybe our last as it was announced it will not be returning next year). I was so intrigued by the outfits and the age range of the people participating. It was great to see so many younger people taking part in this tradition. After the Grand Entry, others were allowed to join in on the dancing. Personally I could have stayed all day and watched them dance and listen to the beat of the drums! Since there was a fairly large group of us that met to see the Pow-Wow and we all decided to continue the fun and hit up Home D Pizzeria for some grub. We had great food and service and I know all of us adults were impressed at how well the kiddos behaved! Next up was the International Children's Festival. This was also the first time that we attended this event. The kids were allowed to pick up a passport at check in and could be stamped at each country. There were crafts from different countries, performances and a dessert area where you could try desserts from different countries. My girls loved getting some henna done on their hands and all the crafts. Oddly enough they both picked a butterfly for their henna design. We will definitely attend next year!
